Historically Farmer's Mutual offers property insurance. The concept began in England in 1696. Benjamin Franklin helped organize the first mutual company in America, in 1752. Named "the Philadelphia Constributionship for the Insurance of Houses Against Loss by Fire," it is still operating and has been visited on two occasions by officials of Farmers Mutual of Grundy County. Mutual insurance arrived in Grundy County in 1895 when, on February 16, a meeting was held at the Trenton courthouse to organize a company. Available farm insurance was extremely expensiveand existing stock companies showed little interest in protecting farm property. The newborn Farmers Mutual Insurance Company secured its articles of incorporation from the Secretary of State later that year in 1895, and has been a Grundy County mainstay ever since. The Farmers Mutual Board, who is the decision making body of the organization, has several long-time members. They are Charles Hoffman, Donald Woodard, L.D. Gibson, John McCloud, and James Hamilton, as well as Bill Robbins and Gary Black. When a claim is presented, unlike many of its competitors, the local board makes the decision regarding the claim. This high degree of control insures customer satisfaction among clients of the agency.
